Do you have any idea what might be destoying my dream of warm, ripe tomatoes picked at the peak of freshness??

Did you put out slug bait? Looks like slugs to me.
Looks like some biological pruning- make a clean cut above the stem that he was chomping on and put out some slug bait. The plant looks healthy. Remember to plant your tomatoes in a different place every year.
